Decades ago, purchasing an Afghan meant
one married into a genepool. When
breeding outside the line for a generation
or two, dogs’ attributes remained consistent,
largely due to line purity. I was advised
by many early on to pick a line and stick with it.
(Easy to pick; difficult to maintain
and grow). Line breeding was emphasized,
(I should say EMPHASIZED), so I line bred
2 -3 times (or inbred), then outcrossed
with a portion linking back.

Sharrah's foundation dog from 1971, Ch.
Shangrila Pharaoh Kauravya, came from such
a prolific genepool. Dr. Gerda Kennedy
founded Shangrila in the early 60’s. (She bred and
owner-handled Ch. Shangrila Pharahna Phaedra
to #1 winning Afghan bitch of all times,
until the record was broken several years
back). Shangrila dogs brought certain elegance
to the ring not seen before www.sharrah.com/gandharra_genepool_home.html
Ch. Kauravya solidified Sharrah’s genetic
prepotency, because he was out of a
Ch. Gandharra son bred to a full Ch. Gandharra
litter sister... whether one likes Shangrila
or not, that pedigree was a gift of gold.

Genetic prepotency encompasses EVERY puppy
in a litter; not the one winning dog.
THE LITTER and its ANCESTORS determine
pheno- and genotypic pre-dispositioning,
NOT a dog's honors or a pedigree laced
with a kennel name. Pedigrees with such
sprinkled name repetition are not necessarily
gene pools.
Sharrah remains small and private, with
a conscious effort to achieve and maintain that
level of excellence we started with. Eight
generations later, we value the lost art of
breeding, repeatable lineage and embrace
prolific gene pools. The result is standard
sized dogs, consistently sound with deep
briskets and level toplines, full dentition,
no dysplasia, and balanced / open, springy
gait - the essence of a true Afghan serving
form and function. It’s easy to live in
the moment with a flavor-of-the-day mentality, but
hard to be memorable in the best interest
of purebred dogs.
For me, it's ALL about the genepool.
